Tí Chulainn

  • 01 January 2004

Tí Chulainn is a unique and innovative community-run project set in the beautiful rugged scenery of the mountains of the Ring of Gullion in South Armagh an area known for its long traditional heritage of mythology, music, song, Irish language, folklore and history. The project aims to foster the regions rich cultural environment and share it with visitors and to provide a focus for the development of cultural tourism in Northern Ireland. Central to the project is the Cultural Activity Centre, which promotes a full programme of arts and cultural activities live performances by local and visiting artists, audio-visual presentations and exhibitions and guided tours of the areas archaeological and historical past. A wide range of short residential courses are also on offer, including Irish language, music, song, dance, folklore, archaeology and local history. Built with European support, the Centre houses performance spaces, exhibition areas, cultural heritage archives, tuition and workshop spaces and conference facilities. It opened in October 1998, in time for the Slieve Gullion International Festival of Traditional Singing, and is already providing tangible cultural and economic benefits for the regional community, as well as a unique, authentic and participation-oriented tourism product for visitors.
