New platform wagons to improve container transport in Poland

  • 05 November 2019

As part of efforts to promote multimodal transport, the project entails the purchase by Polish rail freight operator PKP CARGO S.A. of 936 platform wagons for transporting containers by railway. Of these wagons, 324 will be 40-foot-long (12 m) Sgmmnss series, 468 will be 80-foot (24 m) Sggrss series and 144 will be 90-foot (27 m) Sggmrss series.

Running on standard-gauge, 1 435 mm rails, the wagons will serve 91 routes between maritime and land terminals, as well as other destinations, encompassing virtually all of Poland.

Delivery during 2019-22

Of the 40-foot platform wagons, 100 will be delivered in 2020, a further 100 in 2021 and 124 in 2022. The first 50 80-foot wagons will be delivered in 2019, with 300 more to follow in 2020 and the remaining 118 in 2021. Delivery of the 90-foot wagons will begin in 2021 with 80 units, followed by a further 64 in 2022. The wagons are adapted to the length of 20, 40 and 45-foot long shipping containers.

A bigger share for container transport

The primary objective of the project is to increase the share of container transport as a proportion of overall freight transport in Poland. It is aimed at contributing to the transfer of a portion of goods transport from road to rail by helping to improve the standard and increase the capacity and frequency of local and interregional rail freight services within Poland, and of international freight connections.

Reducing emissions

Facilitating a shift in goods transport from road to rail will cut harmful emissions from transport and increase safety by reducing the number of trucks on the roads. PKP Cargo customers and groups, including terminal operators and freight forwarders, will benefit from improved standards of service thanks to the use of modern wagons for container transport. The wagons will help meet a growing demand for intermodal transport.

More and better-served intermodal connections will improve the technical and economic efficiency of the freight transport system by strengthening supply chains and fostering integration of various transport modes.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project “Purchase of platform wagons for intermodal transport by PKP CARGO S.A.” is EUR 106 362 534, with the EU’s Cohesion Fund contributing EUR 43 209 359 through the “Infrastructure and Environment” Operational Programme for the 2014-2020 programming period. The investment falls under the priority 3 "Development of TEN-T road network and multimodal transport" within thematic objective “TO7 - Transport and energy networks”.
