  • 29 November 2019

To meet the growing healthcare needs of the citizens of Greece’s Epirus Region, this EU-funded project built a new, state-of-the-art, fully equipped wing at the University General Hospital of Ioannina.

By completing the hospital's functional infrastructure at all levels of care, citizens of the Epirus Region and its surrounds can now access new building facilities and receive specialised medical treatment that benefits from the latest technological and medical developments.

The five-story building houses an array of new departments and specialties, thus ensuring people benefit from convenient, comprehensive treatment and care.

Expanded space and services

The main goal of the expansion was to provide the space and infrastructure for specialised medical practices to enhance the hospital’s core services. The new wing houses 69 new nursing units (beds), eight integrated care beds, eight general beds, five operating theatres, five surgery rooms, and five emergency rooms. Outside, over 70 new parking spaces were added.

All rooms were furnished with the necessary medical, technological, and housekeeping equipment expected from one of the Greece’s most respected hospitals. The new facility and its departments have received full accreditation from the relevant regulatory boards.

Improved efficiency and quality

With the addition of specialties such as interventional radiology and interventional neuro-radiology, along with new modern biomedical and digital technologies, the hospital is well-positioned to provide patients comprehensive, end-to-end treatment and care. Since the wing’s inauguration, patients have been enjoying improved efficiency and quality of services.

Total investment for the project “Addition of a five-storey building facility to Ioannina University General Hospital” is EUR 18 505 282, with the EU’s European Regional Development Fund contributing EUR 15 375 662 through the “Thessalia - Sterea Ellada – Ipiros” Operational Programme for the 2007-2013 programming period and the “Epirus” Operational Programme for the 2014-2020 programming period.
