A major project to lay 55 km of natural gas pipeline between Tworóg and Tworzeń in the Śląskie region of Poland has received backing from the European Regional Development Fund. Works includes constructing five valve stations, making connections to other sections of the main transmission system, and providing ancillary infrastructure such as control and measurement instruments and an automation system. The pipeline has total capacity of around 1.1 normal cubic metres of gas per hour (Nm3/h) and forms part of European network of gas pipelines.
Gas pipeline in southern Poland helps build Europe’s internal energy market
- 22 November 2019
The Tworóg-Tworzeń pipeline is a part of the west branch of the North-South Gas Corridor. It connects the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal in Świnoujście with the Baltic Pipe – via Poland the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary – and through to the LNG terminal in Croatia.
The North-South Corridor is included in the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Gas 10-Year Network Development Plan 2017. It is an important part of the North-South gas interconnections in central-eastern and south-eastern Europe. The corridor was defined as a project of common interest under the EU’s Trans-European Energy Infrastructure.
The North-South Corridor is composed of 10 different projects in Poland. The Tworóg to Tworzeń pipeline represents the fifth major project adopted by the European Commission and the seventh section of the corridor co-financed from the ERDF. The total value of the EU co-financing allocated to the completion of the corridor in 2014-2020 programming period is around EUR 472 million.
Major investments
The LNG Terminal in Świnoujście was built in 2006-2016, and was the first investment of this type in central and eastern Europe and in the Baltic Sea region. The project received EUR 80 million from European Energy Programme for Recovery and EUR 230 million from ERDF in 2007-2013.
The North-South Corridor, once connected through LNG Świnoujście with the Baltic Pipe project, will make a significant contribution to the creation of an internal European energy market.
Total investment and EU funding
Total investment for the project “Tworóg - Tworzeń gas pipeline” is EUR 105 934 559, with the EU’s European Regional Development Fund contributing EUR 51 562 922 through the “Infrastructure and Environment” Operational Programme for the 2014-2020 programming period. The investment falls under the priority “Transport and energy networks”.
