A project to construct the Maarjamõisa Medical Campus at Tartu University Hospital brings benefits to patients across a comprehensive range of health disciplines. Both accessibility and quality of health care looks set to be improved through the new infrastructure.

This project is for the construction of the “J Building”, which houses a number of medical services including:
The outpatient and day care department of the Haematology and Oncology Clinic;The outpatient and day care department of the Internal Medicine Clinic;The Eye Clinic Surgery Unit and outpatient reception; andThe Department of Cardiac Surgery, including its intensive care unit.The 19 565 m2 building also houses the endoscopy centre, radiotherapy unit and general pharmacy. It is estimated that services provided through the project should reduce hospital stays by 0.4 days. The availability of medical care is increased through the new build, especially the capacity and quality of acute care services. The new centre adds 41 inpatient beds and 75 day care beds to the hospital’s roster.
Improved care and working conditions
Delivering better access to quality health care at the Tartu complex will help the entire population of Estonia in the long run. In particular, the number of serious complications is expected to decrease as a result of improving the availability of medical facilities and through the concentration of expertise at the site.
The project will improve the treatment conditions for around 500 000 people who will have better access to medical care. A higher concentration of medical expertise will significantly reduce the risk of complications, and increase the patients' safety and satisfaction. The cooperation between the disciplines of science and education will be more efficient. The project is expected to create 55 new jobs.
Total investment and EU funding
Total investment for the project “Extension and renovation of Tartu University Hospital: Construction of Maarjamõisa Medical Campus, Phase II, stage 1” is EUR 76 844 909, of which the EU’s Cohesion Fund is contributing EUR 32 297 195 from the Operational Programme “Development of Living Environment” for the 2007 to 2013 programming period under the priority “Development of health and welfare infrastructure”.
