Developing R&D potential at Biotehnos in Romania

  • 17 October 2011

This project focuses developing the research capacity of Biotehnos SA research facility in Romania by modernising its research laboratories, updating its equipment and devices and promoting its participation in effective and useful partnerships.

Through the project, the Biotehnos facility, which works on the practical application and exploitation of research results, will both significantly improve its infrastructure and increase opportunities to develop scientific and technical cooperation programmes with RDI institutions and other SMEs, and form domestic and international technological alliances.

Focus on research

The research sector is one of the main focuses of the cohesion policy in Romania, and Biotehnos, which manufactures medicines and dermato-cosmetics, is keen to further develop its R&D activities.

The specialists at Biotehnos have written over 50 patents and patent applications (under examination) in various areas such as technological process, biopharmaceuticals and bio-cosmetics. Their first invention, structured waters, was an internationally significant finding which has many scientific, technological and industrial applications in various fields such as: medicine; biology; electrochemistry; the bio-energetic industry; the pharmaceutical industry; the cosmetic industry and agriculture.

The patents now granted in the USA and the EU have opened the doors for Biotehnos to the international market in the field of biotechnology.

Expanding for success

Through this project, EU and national funds will enable Biotehnos to establish three new laboratories: the Laboratory for Chromatography and Bio-analytical Research, the Packaging Laboratory and the Biotechnology Laboratory, as well as facilitate an upgrade of some other existing units of the company.

The project also foresees the development of a research centre which will support existing researchers in gaining greater specialisation and create new R&D jobs. By the end of the project, 14 jobs in R&D field will be maintained or created which will be a great boost for Romania’s scientific potential, particularly in the areas of pharmaceuticals, dermato-cosmetic, food research, biotechnology and other related sciences.
