A major project for the construction of a broadband network in eastern Poland has been amended to provide even greater data speeds and coverage.

The changes mean that the total length on the fibre-optic network increases by 7 km to a total of 2 013 km. Adjustment of what is know as the “backbone” network brings broadband services within reach of 99.9 % of the local population, up from the original target of 96.5 %. The amendments also deliver data transmission speeds of 100 GB/sec or higher. Services are further improved through the construction of additional connections, as well as through the introduction of new operational and business support systems.
The network is designed to offer open, non-discriminatory access to companies that provide wholesale and “last mile” broadband services to residents and businesses. This upgrade therefore directly benefits broadband operators and their customers, which include individual households, entrepreneurs and public institutions.
By providing access to basic broadband and Next Generation Access (NGA) services, the amended project directly contributes to the EU’s Digital Agenda for Europe. Launched in 2010, the Agenda delivers a set of goals which aim to help European citizens and businesses make the most of digital technologies. The project creates more than 460 jobs upon completion.
Total investment and EU funding
Total investment for the project “Broadband network in Eastern Poland - Podkarpackie region” is EUR 65 549 313, of which the EU’s European Regional Development Fund is contributing EUR 55 716 916 from the Operational Programme “Development of Eastern Poland” for the 2007 to 2013 programming period. Work falls under the priority “Information Society Infrastructure”.
