Proof of Concept Programme

The Proof of Concept Programme (PoCP) is a unique Scottish initiative which makes the important step between initial scientific discovery and first prototype easier for Scottish researchers. Since its launch in 1999, the programme has supported 201 projects (through public funding of £36.4m) of which 153 had been completed by the autumn of 2007. Outcomes are impressive given the risky nature of the projects supported: 38 spin-out companies have been established and 35 licencing deals have been concluded, leading to the creation of over 500 jobs. Moreover, the programme has leveraged £207m of public and private investment, which would not otherwise have happened in Scotland. Under 20% of the projects supported have failed technically, a share which is considered acceptable given the speculative nature of the projects attempting to transform a research result into a marketable product.
