Innovation diffusion

On 23rd May 2024, the S3 Community of Practice (S3CoP) Working Group on Innovation Diffusion hosted a webinar titled Understanding the bottlenecks to innovation diffusion: insights from EU regions. This webinar is part series of webinars that the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy, with the support of the S3 Community of Practice Secretariat, is organising for S3 stakeholders from across regions in EU Member States.

In this webinar, S3 practitioners, experts, policymakers, and other key stakeholders come together to engage in this webinar to discuss the main challenges that EU regions are facing when trying to foster innovation diffusion.

2025

On 28 May 2025, the S3 Community of Practice (S3CoP) Working Group hosted the webinar “Towards an Innovation Diffusion Toolbox” The session introduced a practical self-assessment tool aimed at helping EU regions strengthen their innovation ecosystems. Participants included policymakers, innovation intermediaries and researchers, who explored a new conceptual toolbox designed to address innovation diffusion challenges, boost public and private collaboration and support the design of inclusive and region sensitive policies.

The webinar formed part of the Working Group's ongoing efforts to support learning around the S3 enabling condition for innovation diffusion.

Industrial transitions

On 22nd May 2024, the S3 Community of Practice (S3CoP) Working Group on Industrial Transition will hosted a webinar titled Paving the Way for Industrial Transition through Systemic Change and Inclusive Strategies. This webinar is part series of webinars that the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy, with the support of the S3 Community of Practice Secretariat, is organising for S3 stakeholders from across regions in EU Member States.

The webinar focuses on key implementation challenges identified by S3 practitioners in meeting the S3 enabling condition for industrial transition and gather stakeholder perspectives on needed S3 strategies and support actions to enhance systemic industrial transition efforts across European regions.

2025

On 13 May 2025, the S3 Community of Practice (S3CoP) Working Group on Industrial Transition hosted the second webinar in its series “Industrial Transition in Action: New Smart Specialisation Trajectories.” The session focused on how regions can address long term industrial challenges by leveraging their unique strengths and aligning strategies with the competitive advantages of their value chains. S3 practitioners from regions including Värmland, Ústí, Brittany, Sicily and Andalusia shared concrete cases of regional transformation. Presentations covered topics such as the bioeconomy, lithium processing, digital tools for agriculture, the blue economy and dual use aeronautics. The discussion explored how Smart Specialisation tools can support more focused and effective strategies for industrial transition.

Interregional collaboration

The webinar Empowering interregional collaboration – from capacity to funding was organised by the S3 Community of Practice (S3CoP) and the first in a series of webinars that the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy, with the support of the S3 Community of Practice Secretariat, is organising for S3 stakeholders from across regions in EU Member States.

This webinar was designed to engage S3 practitioners, policymakers, and key stakeholders in a dialogue about the challenges and opportunities in interregional collaboration. With insights drawn from the 2023 activities of the S3 CoP Interregional Working Group, this session aims to build on the groundwork of previous discussions and further enhance collaborative efforts across regions with a special focus on building capacity, securing funding, and aligning strategic objectives for sustainable development.

2025

On 12 May 2025, the S3 Community of Practice (S3CoP) Working Group on Interregional Collaboration hosted a webinar on how domestic and EU funding can better support interregional collaboration, a key driver of innovation led growth across Europe. Based on the Group’s newly published paper, the session brought together S3 practitioners, policymakers and regional stakeholders. It shared lessons from 12 EU regions, insights from a 2024 pilot action involving Tuscany, Norte, North East Romania and Jönköping, and six good practices for aligning funding. The webinar also presented findings from the S3 survey and offered reflections on policy barriers, including low capacity and risk averse audit systems. It formed part of the Working Group’s ongoing work to support fulfilment of the S3 enabling condition for interregional collaboration.
