Wireless ICT
Context
The leading global status of the wireless 5G - and beyond - technologies remains in the hands of a few key players. However, Europe has the opportunity to become a leader in the uptake and utilisation of wireless technologies with applications in sectors including health, sustainable factories, autonomous vehicles, and smart cities/regions. In the future, these sectors will benefit from virtually unlimited wireless connectivity, improving industries’ productivity. New wireless technologies must support the sustainable, energy- and resource-efficient, and secure implementation of new solutions. As part of the S3 Thematic Platform for Industrial Modernisation, the Wireless ICT partnership will promote investments in the field.
Year established: 2020
Regions (lead and partner)
- Leading regions: Norrbotten (SE), Northern Ostrobothnia (Pohjois-Pohjanmaa (FI)
- Participating regions: Northern Savonia (Pohjois-Savo) (FI), North Brabant (NL), Flanders (BE), Baden-Württemberg (DE), Emilia Romagna (IT), Lombardy (IT), Catalonia (ES), Western Greece (EL), Wielkopolski (PL)

Mission
The partnership’s mission is to help develop and implement a common strategy enabling investments in the field of fast and energy- and resource-efficient wireless ICT. The focus will be on:
- Health
- Smart Manufacturing
- Autonomous vehicles: Wireless ICT products and services supporting autonomous vehicles operating in the air, on the ground or water surface, underground or below sea level
- Smart cities/regions
Objectives
Specific objectives of the partnership are:
- To join forces to scale up vertical (thematic) pilot cases into full-scale cross-European value chains and sustainable business cases, aiming to industrial pilots utilizing fast, reliable, secure, and energy-efficient wireless ICT.
- To listen carefully to the needs of the companies.
- To foster the active participation of regional governments will ensure alignment between the business and the societal challenges thus making the value chains robust on a long-term perspective.
- To promote the active participation of academic institutions will ensure flexibility within the partnership thus making it sustainable in the long term.
