Context

The Vanguard Initiative pilot project in Advanced Manufacturing for Energy Related Applications ADMA Energy seeks to make Europe the global leader in manufacturing robust, high-integrity components for the marine renewable, traditional offshore energy and subsea industries. The pilot project is being developed across some of the most advanced European regions in this sector, to pool resources and expertise for the benefit of industry.

Led by Emilia-Romagna and Lombardy, the VI ADMA Energy Pilot brings together seven European regions. These regions host a number of stakeholders with particular expertise in the field, including cluster organisations, research and technology organisations, and universities. Above all, they have a large, established industrial and advanced manufacturing base in marine renewable energy technologies, as well as a wider offshore energy and subsea applications.

Year established: 2014

Regions (lead and partner)

  • Leading regions: Emilia Romagna (IT), Lombardy (IT)
  • Participating regions: Basque Country (ES), Scotland (UK), Asturias (ES), Dalarna (SE), Flanders (BE), Friuli Venezia Giulia (IT), Malopolska (PL)

Mission

The mission of this partnership is to create new business opportunities and foster growth for the sector by facilitating the best partnerships for European companies. This will help address and solve specific challenges at the technological level across different markets and segments:

  • For offshore oil & gas, the challenges include operation in deeper seas, higher pressures and temperatures and with increased levels of corrosive and erosive materials in the flow, whilst maintaining integrity, reducing operation and maintenance costs and meeting more stringent leakage prevention requirements.
  • For offshore wind energy, the challenges include increased water depths, more remote and distant site locations, corrosion of towers and foundations and larger size of components, with a resultant increase in logistical challenges for installation, operation and maintenance.
  • For ocean energy (mainly wave and tidal energies), the current biggest challenge is the survivability of the marine devices.

Objectives

The long-term goal of the ADMA Energy Pilot remains in the creation of new value chains in the growing offshore energy industry. This will be achieved through the provision of support for advanced manufacturing technologies across traditional and emerging sectors and technologies – as well as disruptive innovations related to design, functionality, integration, automation, material, communication and other aspects of components and systems in the Blue Sustainable Economy. This includes new innovations and materials for products, services and processes.

ADMA also seeks to design the tools and services that will enable SMEs, big market players, R&D centres, testing facilities, certification bodies and other

Main activities

  1. Development of current demo cases (Power Transfer in the Sea, Joining of Large-Scale Components, Next Generation Materials, marine H2 production and transport, etc…)
  2. Scouting new fields of intervention (e.g. unmoored offshore wind energy system substructure, and others…)
  3. Exchange of knowledge/experiences and capacity building actions in the form of webinars and study visits
  4. Cross Pilot actions in collaboration with the Hydrogen Pilot
  5. Synergies with EU-funded projects
  6. Scouting of funding opportunities
