Artificial Intelligence and Human Machine Interface (AI & HMI)

Context

The European economy faces unprecedent challenges in terms of digitalisation, economic and ecological transformation leading to changing business models and processes. Interregional cooperation will be of high relevance to cope with these challenges and turn them into opportunities for all the Vanguard Initiative regions and for Europe. At the same time, the crisis sparked by COVID-19 provides new opportunities and can serve as catalyst for European SMEs to facilitate faster digitalisation and development of new digital products and services.Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of the most promising areas of digitalisation and Industry 4.0, which can equip European companies with better tools to rethink and evolve their business models and processes.” (Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut MdL, Minister of Economic Affairs, Labour and Housing of the State of Baden-Württemberg, Foreword to the AI Pilot Proposal to Vanguard Initiative) Artificial Intelligence (AI) driven technologies, leveraged by I4.0 KETs (e.g. IoT, Advanced Embedded Systems, Cloud Computing, Big Data, Cognitive Systems, Virtual and Augmented Reality) are ready to generate new paradigms and developments paths at any level of “physical” systems as automated industrial production systems.

Beside enabling effective management of complex systems and interconnected systems-of-systems, AI driven technologies can strongly impact, and potentially revolutionize, mechatronics, robotics, automation and human-machine interaction. In this context, several patterns are to be detected and developed, for a viable and profitable collaboration between users, designers and producers.

Year established: 2018

Mission

The partnership intends to support the adoption of Artificial Intelligence enhanced cyber-physical system, and more specifically AI driven HMI, exploiting the knowledge, competencies and capacities of the stakeholders of participating regions so to accelerate the innovation processes of companies, including SMEs. The AI Pilot will strongly focus on AI applications in real use cases addressing three main targets:

  • Competitiveness and revenues
  • Workers and employees
  • Social environment and ecosystems

Objectives

The specific objectives of the partnership are:

  • to enhance and accelerate the level of automation systems production and use
  • to introduce the AI concept, design and industrialisation methodologies
  • to increase the level of educational systems of both producers and users
