(Interreg VI-B) Northern Periphery and Arctic

Programme description

The programme area covers approximately 3 million km² of the northernmost parts of Europe and North Atlantic. Territories encompass Finland, Ireland, Sweden, Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland and Norway, which are defined by harsh climate, sparse population and extreme peripherality. Such characteristics makes many traditional forms of cooperation difficult.

The programme supports the twin green and digital transition as well as recovery from the pandemic in this vast region. This way, the northern and arctic communities can cooperate and work together in a way that recognises their specificities.

Through the ERDF, the EU supports the generation of attractive, competitive, and sustainable communities by harnessing innovation and digital solutions. Through these interventions, EU funds support the expansion the capacity for climate change adaptation and resource sufficiency, seizing the unique growth opportunities in the region - including supporting indigenous Sámi and Inuit cultures, livelihoods and entrepreneurship - while taking into account ecosystem-based approaches.

The programme aims also to strengthen the organisational capacity among the communities to make best use of cooperation opportunities, and to boost the programme’s role in developing transnational territorial cooperation in the Arctic.
