(Interreg VI-B) Interreg NEXT Black Sea Basin

Programme description

The programme offers a unique platform for cooperation between Member States and non-EU partner countries in the Black Sea Basin area. This applies to countries like Ukraine and Moldova that were recently granted accession status and Georgia which was granted the European perspective.

Such a cooperation, which allows neighbours like Turkey and Greece to sit around the same table and join forces on the implemention of common projects is rare and highly appreciated by all stakeholders.

Although geographically eligible, Russia was suspended from all cooperation and from this programme after its unprecedented and unjustified aggression against Ukraine. The adoption of the programme was possible because of all interested parties' high commitment, including Ukraine's who took part despite its highly challenging circumstances.

The programme is prepared in line with the priorities of the EU Common Maritime Agenda. DG MARE facilitated the sea-basin strategy to address the major environmental and climate-related issues that the Black Sea Basin and its coastal areas face.

It will focus two thirds of its resources on tackling the impact of climate change and enhancing the protection of biodiversity. The remaining funds will contribute to the blue economy and smart solutions.

Through the adoption of this programme the Commission sends a strong signal of support mainly to Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova. The programme may undergo adjustments, in accordance with further develepments and the area's evolving needs in the future.
