Alentejo Regional Programme 2021-2027

Programme description

On the way to a smarter, more inclusive and competitive Europe, EU funds will help the Alentejo region in becoming greener, more connected, and closer to the needs of its citizens.

Support will be provided to projects that strengthen the research and innovation capacity of the region. This will contribute to local small business’ capacity for innovation while driving the digitalisation of public services. With investment in sustainable and secure broadband infrastructure, services will be more accessible to citizens and business.

The green transition of the region will be supported through energy efficiency measures. Such measures will cover:

  • Decentralising energy production;
  • Preparing the region for the impacts of climate change;
  • Promoting sustainable water and waste management;
  • Preserving biodiversity and natural heritage;
  • Promoting sustainable urban mobility.

EU funds will play a role in upgrading and electrification of the railway section between Casa Branca and Beja. A measure enabling citizens to choose a sustainable transport alternative.

The programme also seeks to enhance social cohesion and employment in the region. To this end, modernising health care and increasing access to services will be instrumental, as will be supporting all levels of education. Additionally, EU support to lifelong learning, employment and entrepreneurship will help enterprises rise to the challenges of the green transition and provide workers with the skills that match labour market demands.

Finally, the programme promotes sustainable development of urban and non-urban areas. Moreover, to reduce disparities and strengthen links between urban and rural areas, services like education, health, housing can play a role in increasing sustainability and competitiveness of cities. For instance, urban regeneration and decarbonisation can act as a boost for the economy of low-density areas.

Coherently with these goals, the Alentejo Litoral will receive targeted support from the Just Transition Fund to support the diversification and green transition of their economy and territory.
