Programme description
The European Commission adopted the single multi-fund cohesion policy programme for the period 2021-2027 in Latvia on 25 November 2022. The programme paves the way for investments from the European Regional Development Fund, the Cohesion Fund, the European Social Fund+ and the Just Transition Fund. The cohesion policy funds will boost the development of the country towards a more competitive, greener and fairer economy.
The funds will be invested to increase Latvia’s level of research and innovation, in particular via investments in innovative Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) and trainings to increase the general level of basic digital skills.
In line with the European Green Deal, the funds will be invested in energy-efficiency measures reducing greenhouse gas emissions and at the same time reducing energy poverty. The CF and ERDF will invest in sustainable modes of transport including railways and better tram and cycling infrastructure in cities. The JTF will mainly invest in the restoration of peatlands, which as a natural carbon sink are reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The investments will also allow more people to acquire labour market relevant skills at all education levels necessary for a digital and green transition, including life-long-learning. They will improve access to early childhood care, education and social housing.
