(Interreg VI-A) NEXT Italy Tunisia

Programme description

This sea-crossing programme aims to foster fair and sustainable development for the people living in the Mediterranean Sea Basin. The programme builds on 15 years of cooperation experience between Italy and Tunisia and it aspires to make the Mediterranean a greener, cleaner, more competitive and more inclusive space to live.

The programme is particularly ambitious in terms of contributing to the Green Deal with 45% of the programme funding allocated to green transition measures and to joint solutions that address climate change and environmental challenges.

Joint actions will focus on increasing renewable energy sources, improving sustainable water management, strengthening the protection and preservation of nature and biodiversity and developing risk management tools.

Secondly, the programme will boost the business system by supporting sustainable growth and competitiveness in SMEs in order to generate higher income and better jobs, particularly for women and young people. This includes start-up initiatives and services, living labs and cross-border business networks.

Tourism is a potential accelerator of economic growth, which is not yet used in a sufficiently sustainable manner. Therefore, the aim is to develop joint models and solutions to promote sustainable, natural and cultural tourism geared towards new market segments as well as responsible and alternative forms of tourism involving local communities.

In addition, the programme seeks to address the fragility in the health systems by ensuring more equal and better access to health in terms coverage and quality of the services in the programme area. The programme will include joint actions to promote access to health care for marginalised and vulnerable populations.

Finally, with the aim to improve the overall cooperation governance, the programme will finance capacity building in public administration, models of participatory governance and small-scale projects that engage civil society and promote a true people-to-people approach.

The programme pays particular attention to ensuring complementarities and synergies with other EU funding streams operating in the Mediterranean Sea Basin.
