Programme description
The programme sets out to address the technological and environmental challenges in Abruzzo. More specifically, the programme focuses on their impact on competitiveness, and on the economic, social and environmental sustainability of the region. The actions supported are divided into five priorities:
- Research, Competitiveness and Development;
- Digital Connectivity;
- Energy and Environment;
- Sustainable Urban Mobility;
- Rebalancing Abruzzo for Widespread Wellbeing.
In accordance with the first priority, interventions will emphasise research and innovation to the benefit of production systems. This will compound the support to the digitalisation of businesses’ production processes, coherently with the revised Smart Specialisation Strategy.
The priority “Digital Connectivity” will devote resources to the strengthening of the Regional Area Network (RAN), so that advanced digital services benefit citizens, businesses, research organisations and public bodies.
Under the third priority, the focus is on a clean and fair energy transition. This will include green and blue investments, circular economy solutions, and climate change mitigation and adaptation measures. Concretely, actions entail the installation of renewable energy production plants (photovoltaic and biomass), adaptation to climate change and disaster risk prevention and the transition to a resource-efficient and circular economy. To that end, the programme will support the establishment of facilities for the treatment and recycling of municipal waste, and the modernisation of the waste collection system. Moreover, businesses implementing circular economy processes in their production will receive support. Finally, EU funds will support the protection of biodiversity.
In the area of urban mobility, interventions aim at promoting multimodal mobility as part of the transition to a net-zero carbon economy. For instance, this will be achieved through the purchase of zero-emission electric city buses and the creation of digital services in local public transport.
The fifth priority focuses on the implementation of the territorial strategies for the eight main urban areas of the region and the municipalities functionally linked to them.
