Programme Catalonia ERDF 2021-2027

Programme description

The programme will support investments in research and innovation. With the goal of consolidating and improving science and technology infrastructure, the programme will promote the deployment of the measures recommended under the regions Smart Specialisation Strategy. These measures will encompass sectors like cybersecurity, connectivity and blockchain, sustainable and advanced materials, biotechnology, advanced digital manufacturing or artificial intelligence. The programme will see to the digitalisation of public services in several sectors, while encouraging business of making the most of this process to boost their business.

With the implementation of a financial instrument the programme contributes to sustainable growth, the improvement of business competitiveness, and job creation.  

To contribute to the green transition, the programme will help improve public buildings energy efficiency and will facilitate the shift to renewable energy sources like solar and geothermal.

Catalonia’s geographical location makes it particularly vulnerable to climate change. The ERDF will invest in mitigation and adaptation actions. These include protecting the coastal area and risk prevention actions against floods and wildfires. For resource conservation, the programme will finance the modernisation of the irrigation system and improve wastewater management. This is complementary to further measures to protect and preserve nature, including Natura 2000 sites. Investments will support sustainable urban mobility with actions, namely through the use of public transport and the promotion of cycling infrastructure.

The ERDF will contribute to social inclusion by making housing accessible to vulnerable groups, along with other measures aimed at reaching full personal and social autonomy. It will also finance the upgrade of hospitals and primary care centres.

Finally, the programme seeks to improve territorial balance and address the main challenges faced by rural areas, with the development of integrated territorial strategies in rural functional areas.
