ESF+ Extremadura

Programme description

The ESF+ regional programme for Extremadura will increase citizens’ socioeconomic wellbeing through the creation of employment opportunities, education and training initiatives, and the fight against poverty and social exclusion, with a particular emphasis on preventing child poverty.

The programme supports the labour market inclusion of vulnerable groups, including Roma, through measures to improve their qualifications, as well as their basic and transversal skills.

Job opportunities for all

The programme promotes entrepreneurship and self-employment, providing hiring incentives for people with special needs to facilitate their entry into the labour market. As part of the regional policy to address depopulation and attract local talent, financial support is also extended to people willing to start a business upon returning to the region. Incentives also include funding for post-doctoral research posts.

For those already employed, funds will be allocated to improve the employment situation of the region's most vulnerable people, and to support work-life balance, particularly through home care services for families with children with disabilities and single parents.

Dedicated support for youth employment

Special incentives are allocated within the programme to support the hiring of young people under permanent contracts and to bolster self-employment. Measures include craft workshops for young apprentices to ensure that traditional economic sectors can thrive in a changing labour market.

Boosting skills through quality education and training

ESF+ investments aim to support the transition of Vocational Education and Training (VET) programmes to the dual model, incorporating both classroom education and on-the-job training. To improve education performance, ESF+ will support teacher training and address the root causes of early school leaving. The programme will also enhance the accreditation of basic skills and promote lifelong learning.

Social Inclusion and equal opportunities

ESF+ projects in the region focus on promoting integration pathways to prevent social exclusion, with an emphasis on re-entry into employment for at-risk groups, including Roma, young offenders, and vulnerable women. Support for people with disabilities will be provided to remove barriers to their employment. Funds will also be dedicated to launching an integrated support programme that fosters the social integration of homeless people or those facing obstacles in accessing housing.

Combating child poverty

Beyond the support allocated to prevent early school leaving, the programme also includes specific therapeutic assistance for vulnerable children, including those in foster care programmes.

Expected impact

More than 171 000 participants will benefit from the programme, including:

  • More than 15 300 participants are expected to find a job or engage in self-employment upon leaving ESF+ support measures;
  • More than 2 200 people from vulnerable or marginalised groups, such as Roma people, will participate in ESF+ funded activities;
  • More than 64 000 children and young people below 18 years of age will participate in activities supported through the programme;
  • More than 9 800 participants are expected to improve their quality of life or experience a positive change in their socio-economic status during or after the programme.
