For better access to broadband services in Calabria

This investment is for the delivery of wideband network architecture, including cable ducts and optical fibre. It will enable telecoms operators to provide broadband access at speeds of 30 megabit per second (Mbps) to more than 790 000 homes and business in Calabria. That means around 1.3 million people will be able to enjoy better connectivity to the internet. The project also makes it possible for more than 980 homes and offices to access ultra-fast broadband at 100 Mbps.

New connections

Telecom Italia owns the new infrastructure, which is being installed in more than 220 Calabrian municipalities. These areas have previously missed out on the broadband revolution due to the market’s failure to provide the necessary technology and connections.

The project is part of Italy’s National Broadband Plan and thereby complements the EU’s Digital Agenda strategy, which aims to help Europe's citizens and businesses get the most out of digital technologies. The project is expected to generate 240 jobs upon completion.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project “Ultra-wide band and digital development in Calabria” is EUR 101 614 000, of which the EU’s European Regional Development Fund is contributing EUR 48 750 000 from the Operational Programme “Calabria” for the 2007 to 2013 programming period. Work falls under the priority “Scientific research, technological innovation and the information society”.
