A safe source of water for Romania’s Maramureș County

  • 17 October 2019

By modernising the water infrastructure in Romania’s Maramureș County, the EU-funded project is giving more residents access to clean drinking water and a safe sewerage system.

The expansion of Maramureș County’s drinking-water supply system and modernisation of its waste-water collection and treatment system has provided 230 800 people – or 100 % of the project area population – with a reliable source of clean drinking water and connection to the local sewerage network.

Located in Romania’s Nord-Vest Region, Maramureș County's project area includes the townships of Baia Mare (including the cities of Baia Mare, Baia Sprie and Tautii Magheraus), Seini, Targu Lapus, Viseu de Sus, Sighetu Marmației, Cavnic and Borsa.

This project is Phase II of a larger infrastructure project, Phase I having been completed during the 2007-2013 programming period.

Clean drinking water on tap

Modernising the County’s drinking-water supply systems involved numerous initiatives which were implemented across all the townships. For example, in Baia Mare, Baia Sprie and Sighetu Marmatiei, the project extended and rehabilitated 9.42 km of the main water transport supply and 58.8 km of the water distribution network. Seini received four new or rehabilitated pumping stations, while Sighetu Marmatiei benefitted from three and Baia Mare and Targu Lapus one each. New water reservoirs were built in Baia Mare, Seini and Targu Lapus, along with a rehabilitated chlorination plant in Baia Mare. The project introduced 10 new supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems.

A safer sewage network

As to the wastewater collection and treatment component of this project, work included extending the wastewater network by 72.2 km; rehabilitating 9.2 km of the wastewater network in Baia Mare, Târgu Lapus, Viseu de Sus, Sighetu Marmatiei and Cavnic; building or rehabilitating 52 wastewater pumping stations located in Targu Lapus, Viseu de Sus, Sighetu Marmatiei, Seini and Baia Mare; and constructing wastewater treatment plants in Baia Mare, Seini, Viseu de Sus and Cavnic.

The project represents a substantial step towards achieving the overall objectives of providing a continuous supply of clean drinking water for the County’s entire population and reducing the risk to human health and the environment caused by inadequate sewage treatment.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project “Extension and modernisation of water supply and waste water treatment systems in Maramureș County - Phase II” is EUR 32 635 775, with the EU’s Cohesion Fund contributing EUR 21 068 070 through the “Large Infrastructure” Operational Programme for the 2014-2020 programming period.
