Commissioner Ferreira in Poland to focus on cohesion policy support for refugees and negotiations of new investment programmes

Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, Elisa Ferreira, will travel to Poland from 4 to 6 April to discuss with national and regional authorities and civil society organisations EU’s support for Member States’ efforts in receiving and accommodating refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine, notably the initiatives recently proposed by the Commission under the Cohesion’s Action for Refugees in Europe.

During this mission, she will travel to the Korczowa border crossing with Ukraine, together with the Polish Minister of Funds and Regional Policy, Grzegorz Puda, and the President of the REGI Committee in the European Parliament, Younous Omarjee. She will meet with regional and local representatives, as well as NGOs working in the reception and accommodation of refugees.

Ahead of the visit, Commissioner Ferreira said: “The illegal and atrocious Russian invasion in Ukraine has forced millions of people to leave their homes creating a humanitarian crisis. The response of the Polish people, who have welcomed millions of refugees to their homes, is an example of European solidarity and deserves every praise. The EU is reinforcing its support under cohesion policy so that funding for refugees and their hosts can be mobilised. Together with the Ukrainian people we will overcome this terrible situation”.

With Minister Puda, the discussions will also involve the Partnership Agreement negotiations between the EU and Poland for the 2021-2027 programming period, the reference document for programming investments for the cohesion policy funds. This visit is part of the Commission's ongoing efforts to use available resources under cohesion policy to support people fleeing the war in Ukraine, as well as to kick start the implementation of the 2021-2027 investment programmes.
