The fourth edition of the Just Transition Platform (JTP) Meeting will take place on 15–17 November 2021. The online event is hosted by DG REGIO and DG ENER. The European Committee of the Regions will organise a Multi-Level Dialogue as a side event.

This three-day meeting will bring together stakeholders from carbon-intensive regions and coal, peat and oil shale regions across the EU. It will include various thematic sessions and networking options, enabling exchange and interaction between Member States, regional and local authorities, non-governmental organisations, social partners and EU institutions.

Through the event, participants will have the chance to learn from one another in their journey towards a just transition to a climate-neutral Europe. The event will provide updates on the Just Transition Fund (JTF) programming negotiations and information about topics to be developed under the Territorial Just Transition Plans. Participants will also be able to hear from experiences with the transition of carbon-intensive regions in North America.

JTP Working Groups prepare to launch

The first day will begin with a multi-level dialogue side event organised by the Committee of the Regions, before the event’s official opening session with Commissioners Elisa Ferreira (Cohesion and Reforms) and Kadri Simson (Energy).

As part of the afternoon sessions, updates from the Coal Regions in Transition initiative will be presented, while the JTP will formally launch and introduce its four Working Groups. These working groups, for which the Commission recently ran a call for applications, will help develop a common just transition vision for carbon-intensive regions. Three of the working groups have a thematic focus (on steel, cement, chemicals) and the fourth will focus on horizontal stakeholder strategy.

Event to close with high-level roundtable led by EVP Timmermans

Days 2 and 3 will offer a range of thematic sessions, before the event closes in the afternoon of 17 November with a roundtable hosted by Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans, involving high-level regional and local representatives. The representatives will provide inspiration for participating stakeholders by discussing their vision and plans for a socially fair transition towards a more sustainable, climate-neutral economy.

More information about this online event and its sessions is available under the link below. All those with an interest in the just transition are encouraged to join the event.
