The Miskolc Zoo and Cultural Park in Hungary has welcomed two new residents and completed a series of renovations with ERDF funding. The changes are intended to meet visitor needs and improve the zoo’s environmental footprint.

A lion and a lynx are the star attractions of the new ‘Sahel showroom’, a new 200 m2 enclosure that features animals from this northern African region.

The tiger house was renovated and a new visitors’ centre was built, equipped with solar panels on the roof and a ramp for wheelchair access. The renovations were completed in time for the zoo’s reopening on 1 May.

The zoo first opened its doors on 20 August 1983. At the time it was called the Miskolc City Game Park. It is located in a 21-hectare hornbeam-oak forest connected to the Bükk National Park, which presents the rich flora and fauna of the Bükk Mountains.

The zoo is home to around 700 specimens of nearly 130 species and varieties. It also takes part in international breeding programmes that have made it possible for animals extinct in the wild to survive in zoos.

This project cost a total of EUR 1.17 million and was one of the most extensive the zoo has undertaken.
