The Utrecht-based De Clique company is turning organic waste into new products, creating fertile ground on which to build a circular economy and create jobs. Thanks to ERDF funding, it is expanding its operations and investing in research and development.

Food waste – including everything from coffee grounds to orange peel – is being turned into products such as soap, tea, beer, bread, animal feed and compost. For example, oil extracted from orange and lemon peel is used to brew a zero-alcohol beer.

The company employs 13 people and collects biowaste and packaging from over 60 firms, supermarkets and restaurants to recycle at its facility. It aims to collect and process 130 tonnes per month by the end of 2021.

The ERDF funding will enable De Clique to expand to the Steck garden centre in the suburb of Overvecht. Here it will set up an oyster mushroom farm, a composting facility and a herb garden.

The investment in R&D will be used to improve its raw materials processing and logistics solutions. De Clique currently uses electric cargo bikes to ferry waste products to its facility.
