A place to call home for orphans in Lithuania

Thanks to an ERDF-funded project, orphans and abandoned children in Utena County in Lithuania can experience living as part of a family, while also benefitting from healthy mental and emotional development.

Community care homes are being built in three apartments in the village of Didžiasalis, in the Ignalina District, providing a haven for children who were previously looked after in government institutions.

Eight children will live in a five-roomed dwelling being created by joining two apartments. A second, four-roomed apartment will provide a home for five children. They will have access to a games room and have their own spaces for learning and studying.

The project has also repaired, enlarged and bought new furniture for the Didžiasalis Children’s Day and Family Support Centre. It has been adapted for the disabled and can now accommodate 25 children.
