Recovering waste industrial heat in Finland

A device that can turn waste industrial heat into electricity is the result of a competition held as part of the ERDF-funded Finnish HUIMA project. It has helped put the spotlight on the need to include this type of energy in a circular economy.
Having identified sources of waste heat in industry, a competition was held in the spring of 2019 to find ways to harness lost energy. A total of 19 ideas were submitted.
The project helped the winning company design, build and install a demonstration device. It can be attached to a ventilation duct or chimney and works with liquids, gas or steam. The electricity it produces can be used to power measurement or data-transmission devices.
Finland’s industrial sector consumes almost half of the country’s total energy and generates large amounts of heat, which currently goes to waste.
An energy-efficiency guide for companies and a network of interested parties in the regions of Southwest Finland and Uusimaa were created as part of the project. ERDF and state funding totalled EUR 151 200.
