Coal Regions in Transition Virtual Week and Carbon Intensive Regions seminar
On the 29th of June, the European Commission will launch the Just Transition Platform during a high-level online event attended by Commissioner Elisa Ferreira and Commissioner Kadri Simson. On the next day (30th of June), a dedicated session will present the Just Transition Mechanism, detailing its purpose and the ways in which it can assist regions, industries and workers to achieve a just transition. This will be followed by the Coal Regions in Transition Virtual Week, addressing issues faced specifically by coal, peat and oil shale regions and by stakeholder seminar focusing on regions dependent on carbon-intensive industries, from the 1st to the 3rd of July.
The Just Transition Mechanism was announced by the European Commission in January 2020. It will provide targeted support to regions and sectors that are most affected by the transition towards the green economy and ensure a just and fair transition that leaves no one behind, by mobilizing up to EUR 160 billion investments. In this context, the role of the Just Transition Platform will be to provide assistance to Member States to unlock the support available through the Just Transition Mechanism. The Just Transition Platform will build on the work of the Platform for Coal Regions in Transition and other sources of support within the Commission to provide a coherent and integrated framework on the just transition. Assistance will be available through a single access point delivering information and knowledge on the just transition, as well as through comprehensive technical and advisory support and the establishment of dedicated project and expert databases.
