A coastal dune forest in south-east Portugal has been announced as a pilot area for an ERDF-funded project. The INHERIT project is designed to enhance and protect natural coastal areas of the Mediterranean by promoting sustainable tourism.

The National Forest of the Coastal Dunes in Vila Real de Santo António will become the first Portuguese INEHERITURA area. The area was created about a century ago to contain the advance of the dunes and create a barrier between the coast and the urban area. It is used by tourists and sportspeople for training and leisure activities.

Footpaths, bicycle paths and bird watching spots have been created in collaboration with the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF) and the Baixo Guadiana Development Association (Odiana).

INHERIT aims to alleviate the adverse effects of tourism in Europe’s Mediterranean coastal areas by conserving natural heritage through the promotion of sustainable tourism. It is co-financed by the Interreg MED Programme and has 15 partners in ten countries.
