A digital translation tool developed using ERDF funds is improving multi-lingual access to Latvia’s state administration websites and software. Since launching a year ago, it has translated 310 million words and processed 16 million translation requests.

Hugo.lv is a language tool freely accessible to everyone via the Internet. It provides translation into Latvian, English and Russian, and can recognise speech and read out written text. Because it has been created using the latest artificial intelligence and is tailored for Latvian government documents, the quality of translation is much higher compared to other online translation services.

The platform also offers voice recognition that allows people with low vision or dyslexia to use the translation tool.

Earlier this year, Hugo.lv won the Platinum Mouse 2019 Award, a digital industry award which is awarded by the Latvian Information and Communication Technology Association.

A chatbot is now being developed for state and municipal authorities using the same technology. The software is designed to simulate human responses to a spoken or written conversation.
