An EU-funded project is modernising the water and sewage system in the central Polish city of Włocławek, helping to improve life for local residents, protect the environment and cut costs.

The project represents the third stage of an overhaul that started in 2004 and is being carried out by the city’s water and sewage company MPWiK with support from the EU’s Cohesion Fund.

The main goal of the current phase is to improve the quality of the system and increase the number of people who are hooked up to it.

A major focus of the project is modernising the water supply network. This includes replacing and reconstructing water mains and water-supply networks with lateral service lines totalling over 19 km in length. These connect plumbing in homes and companies to the system.

Work also includes the modernisation and expansion of a system to manage and monitor water supply and sewage infrastructure. Tasks already completed have improved network operations and contributed to reducing running costs.

The project is being implemented under the EU’s Infrastructure and Environment Programme, with EUR 9.1 million (PLN 39.3 million) in co-financing from the Cohesion Fund.

The previous two projects, also co-financed by the Cohesion Fund, included modernisation of a sewage-treatment plant, construction of a sewage-sludge drying facility and network expansion. Protecting the environment has been a major goal throughout.
