Municipalities in Latvia and Lithuania have visited police and fire and rescue services in Poland to learn about their experiences in cooperating with their counterparts in Germany, thanks to ERDF funding.
The ERDF funding supports Latvia and Lithuania to improve the efficiency and availability of local security services in cross-border regions.
For example, the lead partner – the Zemgale Planning Region – organised an exchange visit to Poland for Latvia’s Akniste, Tervete, and Vecumnieki municipalities, along with Birzai and Rokiskis in Lithuania.
Officials from the two Baltic neighbours visited the Poland State Police Department of the the West Pomeranian Voivodeship to understand the structure and regulatory framework and main approaches to providing security in the region.
Polish officials also focused on the cooperation in place with their German counterparts across the border.
In a follow-up visit, the delegation visited the national fire and rescue service in Scecin for briefings on projects supported by the EU structural funds to train staff and modernise equipment.
EU funding was also used to improve services and cooperation in dealing with major fires, floods and environmental pollution. This includes providing assistance to the neighbouring German territory, if requested.
