An ERDF-funded project is building and upgrading community infrastructure in the Lithuanian town of Biržai to make it safer and more attractive to residents, visitors and businesses.

The project is being implemented by the Biržai District Municipality Administration and aims to make better use of the town’s recreational potential, particularly its lake and surrounding areas. New facilities will be installed while others will be renovated.

The shore of Lake Širvėna will be cleaned up and facilities including a new beach, playground, beach volleyball court, bicycle stands, chess and table tennis tables, pedestrian trail, bridge, benches and trash cans will be installed.

An old pedestrian and bicycle trail along the lake will be removed and a new hiking and cycling trail with places to rest and lighting will be built. A pedestrian and cycling trail will be built along P Kalpoko Street and a sidewalk and lighting on Alyvų Street. A section of Liepu Street will be renovated and a parking lot constructed. The local Rugelis nursery school and kindergarten will get a playground.

The pedestrian and bicycle paths along the lake will allow for safer commuting and allow tourists to visit attractions in the area and contribute to a wider network of routes for hikers and cyclists.
