The ERDF-funded project ‘Net Zero Impact Utility’ aims to change the way water is processed and distributed across Malta and Gozo to improve groundwater conservation and water sustainability.

The project will adopt a holistic approach, investing in the social, economic and environmental dimensions of water sustainability with the aim of contributing both to living standards and economic growth across Malta.

A total of EUR 150 million will be dedicated to a number of activities. These include upgrading the capacity and efficiency of seawater desalination plants, resulting in 4 billion litres less water being extracted from the ground every year. A reverse osmosis plant will be built in Gozo, with a production capacity of 9 million litres of water a day.

These initiatives will be supported by an overhaul of the water-distribution system across Malta, including upgrades for the sewage network and the introduction of new treatment technologies.

Finally, an additional 7 billion litres of recycled water will be made available to the agricultural community in Malta every year.
