The ERDF-funded project Caribbean Strategy for Sustainable Blue Tourism was launched in February 2019 in Sainte-Luce, Martinique. By bringing together a number of local and international partners, the project is hoping to increase the Caribbean’s appeal to tourists while improving the protection and preservation of its natural environment.

The project, which will run until 2020, is aiming to provide added value to relevant companies, sites and natural areas in cultural and environmental heritage.

For example, the partners will underscore the potential added value of local and traditional environmental and cultural elements, such as aromatic and medicinal plants, maritime heritage (the Martiniquan skiff), fruits, spices, crafts, gastronomy, famous characters, festivals and much more.

Ultimately, the project will initiate a new sustainable blue tourism strategy by cooperating with different partners and ensuring the redistribution of the income generated by tourist activities within the local area.

The multi-destination cultural route project, financed by the Interreg-Caribbean, also hopes to help the West Indies to becomes recognised as a centre of excellence for cultural ecotourism.
