This ERDF-funded project will open the first innovation hub and incubator for sustainable chemistry in Flanders to help start-ups and innovation projects flourish within the chemical industry.

The chemical incubator BlueChem and innovation hub Blue_App will focus on the valorisation of waste and side streams, as well as the development of renewable chemicals and sustainable materials.

Progress in these fields will be crucial to developing a circular economy and achieving greater resource efficiency. Both BlueChem and Blue_App will provide flexible workspaces, including offices and laboratories for start-ups, SMEs and larger innovation projects in Antwerp. In total, the project will cost over EUR 11 million and will be co-funded by the ERDF, the city of Antwerp and the Flanders region.

The project aims to link multidisciplinary knowledge in sustainable chemistry with training and education, as well as work on sustainability evaluation and digitisation. This will help to foster expertise and excellence among research projects in the field so that they can progress to industrial scale and start to make a real impact.
