This project, funded by the ERDF, aims to build new roads around Larissa in a bid to ease congestion in the city and improve transport connections across Greece.

Today, a large number of cars are obliged to use the main roads through Larissa when driving to Western Greece from Thessaloniki or Athens.

To ease the journey, the ERDF is funding the construction and adaptation of more roads, lanes, roundabouts, junctions and cycle paths in and around Larissa. This will reduce the traffic on Larissa’s inner ring and, crucially, cut pollution from exhaust fumes in the city’s residential areas.

The improvements will also cut noise and air pollution in the city and help to reduce traffic accidents. The new road infrastructure around Larissa will enable better travel connections across Greece, ensuring cars can travel at higher speeds, consume less fuel and emit less CO2. This will raise the country’s economic productivity by getting people and goods to their destinations faster, more efficiently, and cost-effectively.

Ultimately, the ERDF-funded project hopes that these road improvements will lead to increased economic growth within the city, across the region of Thessaly, and beyond.
