An ERDF-funded project is bringing together different transport operators from a range of European countries and regions in a bid to identify and develop intelligent approaches to commuting.

In Europe today, the daily trek to work is a source of substantial energy consumption. To ease the burden on resources and the environment, the project aims to come up with smarter, more efficient daily travel strategies for citizens.

To achieve this, the project seeks to encourage coordination between public transport companies, municipalities and other stakeholders. It also foresees training for civil servants working in this domain, as well as local level seminars, the rolling out of low-carbon mobility pilot actions and the creation of online platforms.

Italy’s Iuav di Venezia University, a project partner, recently hosted the first collective meeting of the ‘Smart Commuting’ project, which is funded by the Interreg Central Europe programme covering 76 regions and nine countries. The ERDF has allocated EUR 1.6 million for the undertaking.
