An additional EUR 28 million from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) has been allocated to the Lazio region, which was affected by the devastating earthquakes in 2016 and 2017 that struck central Italy. A similar amount, funded by Italy, will be added to this EUR 28 million from the EU for Lazio. This money will be used to improve the earthquake resistance of public buildings in the region. The Commissioner for Regional Policy, Corina Creţu, explained: "The months and years go by, but for the Italians who lost everything in the disaster, the suffering continues. They have not forgotten and Europe has not forgotten them. We will continue to support Italy in the long term and with this investment we can look to the future." The money comes from the additional budget of EUR 1.6 billion of European funding that Italy will receive following the reassessment in 2016 of all Cohesion Policy national budgets for the 2014-2020 period, in order to take into account the impact of the crisis; Technical Adjustment. Two weeks ago, the Commission announced that the region of Umbria is set to receive an additional EUR 28 million in order to support the economic recovery and reconstruction efforts, in particular, the Basilica San Benedetto in Norcia.
