Title: The European City Embassies Network
Summary
Our project consists of building a network of European City Embassies. They must lead to a network that exists of European cities where urban questions and innovations are key points. A network supported by active citizens, students and participating professionals that are actively engaged in their urban surroundings. An open platform that focuses on exchanging and sharing practical knowledge and experiences between city makers: people who contribute to build their city from the bottom-up. Due to crises the physical development of urban areas, issues concerning housing, energy, food, water, liveability and health will never be approached the way it has been done in the past decades. These complex issues of our time shouldn’t be addressed in a merely centralized or top-down manner, but locally, with shared ownership as the leading principle.Today, the city is owned by many. Everywhere in cities around Europe small-scale initiatives arise. Initiatives that were invented by citizens who are formulating a local answer to questions concerning them as a community. Still top-down institutions are important for the development of a city, with their expertise and bird eye’s view, the (local) government is a crucial partner for bottom-up initiatives. The project will comprehend a series of City Expeditions in an estafette like manner. The hosting City Embassy develops a program wherein tours along bottom-up initiatives and institutions involved in urban development and a local conference are combined. Participants are active citizens, engaged professionals and officials from throughout Europe. An online platform, where members of the network exchange experiences and practices will play a supporting role in developing the network. The final event will be held in Amsterdam during The Presidency of the Council of the European Union in June 2016 that is hosted by the Netherlands, and will attract participants from all 28 member states of the Union.
