Title: Overcoming 20th century historical traumas
Summary
The project comprised 7 of seminars and a follow-up meeting with national coordinators. Each seminar gathered teachers from countries with challenging histories. Taking the Holocaust as a starting point and using a comparative approach with other mass crimes (Stalinism, discriminations against Roma, etc.), seminars aimed to tackle contentious points of local history. The primary impact of the project is the training of 263 multipliers. They are now equipped with the most up-to-date historiographic knowledge on the Holocaust and concrete teaching tools to face contemporary classroom challenges (antisemitism, conspiracy theories, etc.) and can offer a multi-perspective approach on sensitive issues. These multipliers can themselves act as multipliers for future transnational dialogues.Students indirectly benefit from the project through a spillover effect. All feedback showed that in class, teachers used the knowledge they acquired. Other teachers, educators and colleagues also indirectly benefit from trainings. Surveys showed a vast majority of them share what they learned.Educators dealing with dividing issues have created bonds between themselves, exchanging ideas and experiences. This transnational group dynamic and this rediscovery of the neighbor’s history foster the creation of a civil society network working towards mutual understanding, reconciliation, and the emergence of a common European narrative and identity. Those networks will have an opportunity to be strengthened over the years. Indeed, dialogues are maintained when successful trainings between the same countries are reiterated the previous year.Additionally, each seminar had specific impacts: strengthening of the cooperation between Serbia and Croatian ministries/agencies of education; first official educational cooperation between North Macedonia and Greece; initiation of the first dialogue between Albanese and Serbian teachers and Hungarian/Slovak. The major impact of all these trainings is to create spaces of dialogue and building up a common view of the Historical facts for the first time.This Europe for Citizens action grant allowed this project to become more European in its reach and visibility and helped its audience.
