Title: The Dissonant Heritage in European Towns - Creating a European narrative of contested identities through citizens' participation
Summary
Dissonant Heritage is a kind of heritage that still hurts and creates conflicts within local communities but all around Europe there are many towns that are deeply characterized by presence of such uncomfortable heritage, that include a discordance of different stories and consistency in the way the past is represented and memories used in public sphere. This kind of heritage is not easy to manage, especially at local levels. There is a constant risk of being misunderstood or accused of historical revisionism with regards to regimes that built the legacy. The presence of a significant dissonant heritage is what characterizes all the towns involved in the project and its management represents a big challenge for local administrators who are constantly looking for new solutions to transform this heritage in an asset for democratic and sustainable development of their communities. The aim of the project is to stimulate policy makers, cultural operators and local organizations to elaborate new management solutions based on “active engagement of local citizens in creation of narratives of our dissonant heritage”. Only if managed in a wise and participatory way, our dissonant heritage can become a reservoir for bridging, relating and understanding instead of being used to create and encourage mutually exclusive identities and drawing boarders in the mind of neighbouring communities. In order to each this objective, the partnership (composed by 9 municipalities and 1 Cultural Route) will implement a set of activities both at international (events) and local (establishment of local working groups) level. All activities will focus on: involvement of citizens in creation of local heritage communities to support the local administrations in implementation of actions and policies related to the management and promotion of dissonant heritage; strengthening relationship between heritage and communities through active engagement; capitalization of good practices and policies.
