Title: European Observatory on Memories
Summary
With this new proposal the European Observatory on Memories (EUROM) aims to consolidate and expand its network of international partners and develop new activities open to the citizenry. The EUROM main goal is improving a broad European remembrance policy; it wants to integrate the different memories related to the 20th Century conflicts that have a public influence today, such as the commemorations for the end of WWII in 2015 with the participation of the former allies’ countries which today are experiencing political tensions among them. The overall objective is broad and ambitious: consolidate a permanent Pan-European network to analyze the multiplicity of memories based on the experience of local, national and transnational remembrance policies. The Observatory is the tool to develop an objective and a programme: 1) The objective is promoting and analyzing memorial initiatives in the EU Member States and some third countries through a transnational network of professionals. This network will take the advantage of a growing interest among academics, civil society organizations, institutions and memorial museums to share projects, ideas and studies. Moreover, the Observatory is available to the European institutions to advise them on memorial policies.2) The 2015-17 updated programme is based on a range of activities open to the public to promote reflection among citizens, associations and the academic sphere. It includes a film festival, workshops in different countries, a free access webinar, a biannual on-line publication, a website with archival documentation from all the partners, the commemoration of the Srebrenica facts, the EUROM 2nd international symposium, and a research fellowship for students. The participation of society in the EUROM activities is an inseparable factor of the project and its transversal and multidisciplinary vocation is one of its best assets.
