Summary
The project focused on engaging citizens in democratic processes. GET2IT aimed to create a transnational network of towns focused on enhancing citizen engagement in local actions based on the values of volunteering & solidarity. The participants were local authorities, students, citizens (incl. youth & elderly), educators, CSOs & representatives of public bodies (in education, social care, culture, environmental protection, employment). The project included participants from Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia, Italy & Czechia. The project included 5 events (in Varazdin, HR; Sremska Mitrovica, RS; Cavirago, IT; Ptuj, SI; & Prague 5, CZ) that focused on building citizens’ understanding on how to plan & manage actions that contribute to inclusive growth (re: education, employment, cultural diversity, environment, migration). At the events there were workshops, presentations, conferences, demonstrations & site visits. In activities, the partnership focused on developing specific skill sets, creating new ties & demonstrating good practices. The role EU integration & values (i.e. Intercultural dialogue, volunteering, solidarity, etc.) play in creating a sense of belonging to the community was also examined by sharing views & discussing EU policy impacts. GET2It's communication tools made citizens aware of the project, promoted regional best practices in volunteering as well as explained how EU values function in practice. To build on project results, the partnership has prepared a training curriculum that focuses on training volunteers/citizens in community leadership, and concluded a long-term partnership agreement.Citizens are the main drivers of growth. They must be active in developing their communities. In the partner regions, citizens have been unaware how they can plan & participate in local actions, and often rely on local authorities to take lead roles. There is also confusion re: the EU’s role in local actions, esp. a lack of understanding about the principles of solidarity & volunteering. The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted all Europeans, and the format of events had to adapted to the situation (into online or hybrid formats) to allow activities to take place and facilitate the exchange of know-how between citizens from the partner regions. Despite the challenges, the partnership addressed the identified issues and achieved the project aim, which is highlighted via the project results:1) Citizens gained new knowledge & skills to manage actions in line w/EU policies (re: education, employment, culture, social inclusion, environment & migration): They learned how to engage different stakeholders, how EU policies & democratic processes function, and how to turn ideas into projects. By presenting information & good practices, participants have learnt how EU policies promote democracy and contribute to improving the citizens’ lives; and how to volunteer.2) Enhanced awareness among citizens about how EU policies have a positive impact: At each event, the partners showed how EU programmes & values (solidarity, intercultural dialogue) foster action locally (in education/employment, environment, culture, social inclusion & migration). The partners showed how they cooperate transnationally & encouraged volunteering.3) Training curriculum & partnership agreement: The long-term partnership agreement builds on project outcomes. The new curriculum developed promotes community leadership in partners' towns. The training was tested at the last event. The partners have developed the training further based on the findings.462 persons from HR, Sl, IT, RS & CZ directly participated. 400.000 citizens (indirect participants) were reached via dissemination activities (good practice guide, leaflets, social media.webpages, media, & online quiz).
