Title: MEMOIR. REMEMBERING THE FORGOTTEN HOLOCAUSTS OF ROMA, HOMOSEXUAL AND DISABLED PEOPLE
Summary
The project aims to capitalize and expand the results of the project "Recalling the Roma and Sinti Holocaust. Paths inside the Memory", involving new countries and more target groups. It will focus on building up the memory and the remembrance of the so-called "Forgotten Holocausts": - The Samudaripen/Porrajmos, the Roma/Sinti Holocaust during the WW2, a subject largely ignored in the European memory, that brought to the death of about 500.000 people. In the countries occupied by the Nazi, Roma/Sinti people, just like the Jewish, were massively exterminated. Their genocyde is properly a forgotten massacre, because deleted by collective memory. Most Roma were killed by the Ustacha at the Jasenovac concentration camp, the “Balcan Auschwitz”. Despite the scale of the crimes committed there, most of the world has never heard of Jasenovac, thus called “the dark secret of the Holocaust”.- The Homocaust, the extermination of the homosexuals. Between 1933 and 1945, an estimated 100.000 men were arrested as homosexuals. About 50.000 of them were officially sentenced; 5.000 to 15.000 of those sentenced were incarcerated in Nazi concentration camps.- The deportations of Romanian Roma to Transnistria, were thousands of them died.- The persecutions suffered by Roma in Bulgaria, Greece and Hungary. - The massacre of disabled people by the Nazists, known as "Aktion T4".The project aims are:- Promoting a reflection on the rise of intolerance that led, during the WW2, to crimes against Humanity. - Commemorating the memory of all the “forgotten victims” under the Nazi Regime; - Promoting awareness about a denied page of the European History, fostering a feeling of citizenship among the project target groups, also those minoritarian in Europe such as the Roma people are. They do not have a historical written documentation and rely only on oral memory, but the memory of such events is rapidly vanishing as the people who lived the events are fewer and fewer.
