Title: Developing a Respectful Europe Against RoMa discriminations and social exclusion.
Summary
The DREAM project aimed at creating an international European network of local associations and a municipalities, so as to reflect on contemporary forms of socio-cultural exclusion and stigmatization of Roma and Sinti ethnic minority groups in Europe. The main objective was to realise concrete actions to promote social inclusion and fight professional and social exclusion for this minority. This was, indeed, the first result of the project. During the project impementation, the project Consortium succeeeded in sensitising the local civil societies of all the participating countries, through the organisation of a whole number of 10 national and international events. Local, regional and national level political Institutions participated in the debate proposed by DREAM with their representatives, and focused on the issue of Roma people life conditions and social intergation. As it is known, Roma a and Sinti are the most numerically significant minority groups in Europe; even in case they have a EU citizenship, they continue to be perceived as "immigrants", and as extraneous elements inside European civil societies. They are often victims of prejudice and stigmatization due to mediatic stereotypes; their traditional works, not recognised as true jobs, are not protected by Institutions, and actually this is one of the strongest discriminations against them. As well, the lack of legal protection for their language is a problem. With respect to this picture, the project succeeded in:- Training social workers and operators (more than 70) as well as teachers of secondary schools (more than 70) on the main Roma cultural and social issues and problems, in order to provide them with tools and solutions to manage them: basic knowledge of Roma culture and discussion on European strategies to fight Roma exclusion has been provided. - Exchanging good practices in all the partner countries, to foster Roma socio-cultural inclusion and to fight marginality suffered by them. This goal was reached through the 10 project events, both national and international. The main target groups addessed by such activities have been the youngsters (aged 12-18), their teachers and the Roma themselves (about 100).- Promoting a scientific and legal debate on the need to proctect the Romanì language, one of the most ancient in Europe. With respect to this specific goal, we want to underline that two specific events were organised; they faced the participation of National Authorities strongly committed to the issue of protection of Romanés language, in Croatia and Italy. More in details, in Croatia the DREAM partners met to discuss about the need to legally protect the ancient Roma language, that can be regarded as a true cultural heritage of these people, in the frme of the International Day of Romanì Language, organised by the Croatian partner "Kali Sara". In Italy, on the occasion of the final event, the partners discussed on this issue with Italian Senator Felice Besostri, who attended the workshop. Prof. Besostri is the father of the Italian Law. 482/1999 on the protection of linguistic minorities in Italy. But the Law still needs to be integrated at the national level, including just the Romanì language; Prof. Besostri streongly fought to include Roma people inside the number of minority groups to be protected but he did no succeeded in this, so he he still promoting a sensitization campaign to modify the mentioned Law according to this issues.
