Title: NETwork in the MEDiterranean sea
Summary
The aim of the project NETMED was to create a twinning network between small European centers, forming an imaginary line in the Mediterranean that connected the European states facing the sea across from the East to the West part. The extremes of this line are Prača in Bosnia Herzegovina and Manteigas in Portugal, joined by San Valentino in Abruzzo Citeriore, Olesa de Bonesvalls in Spain and Seneghe in Sardinia. The latter, which represents the central point of the Mediterranean, was the municipality in which the whole project took place. During these 8 days, press conferences, seminars, workshops were held. The socio-cultural events as the “Town- Twinning Ceremony” but also the conference “Europe and Europeans” saw the participation not only of important figures such as Member of European Parliament, prefects and mayors, but above all the considerable participation of many citizens who actively participated in all the meetings stimulating dialogue among citizens with different backgrounds pushing them to reflect and discuss on the issue of migration in the Mediterranean Sea. In the events there was also the participation of associations and organizations involved in the migrants’ and refugees’ reception and who carry on integration process in the all territory. Fundamental to understand better the migration issue were the witnesses of people who personally experienced all this. The “Flash Mob NET-MED” was another important event. It was staged a landing simulation on the European coast in which in this case, the participants from different countries, were welcomed as the migrants. This saw the participation of journalists and of the public opinion. The project encouraged also the integration between not only the two twins’ towns but also with all the others, sharing common traditions and knowing new ones. The network of the project "NET-MED" aims at the creation of a stable link between the small municipalities in favor of dialogue and cultural exchange with the migrant communities already present and integrated in European society. The NET-MED project is only a starting point for small communities interested in dealing with the issue of refugee reception.
