Title: Reshaping the Image of democratic Revolutions 1989: European contemporary Perspectives and forgotten Lessons from the Past
Summary
The aim of the project was to remind European citizens about the democratic revolutions of 1989 as a period of arduous struggles for pluralistic democracy and peaceful coexistence in Europe. Eight partner organizations joined efforts to foster transnational and intergenerational dialogue about 1989 and the ways it reshaped and keep reshaping Europe. To contribute to citizens’ awareness of the democratic revolutions as prerequisites for a united and peaceful Europe, the consortium organized five activities. 480 direct participants from 18 European countries and 9 600 indirect participants were involved in the project. Citizens from the former Eastern and Western blocs compared their perspectives on the democratic revolutions discovering various similarities between their countries. The project contributed to the strengthening of European identity and fostered resilience against contemporary populist narratives aiming to bring back old divisions. Time witnesses who actively fought for democratic change shared their testimonies as a reminder that today’s democracy had a price paid with numerous instances of civil resistance to totalitarian and authoritarian regimes. In the scope of the project the partners have created together the following results:- the documentary film "How did 1989 change Europe?". The film collects personal testimonies of European citizens from different countries and their recollections of the democratic changes of 1989 and the transition to democracy and a free-market economy in the 1990s. The documentary combines perspectives from both sides of the former Iron Curtain and contributes to the strengthening of a common European identity that cherishes and protects democracy, pluralism, and human rights. Furthermore, the film can be used in formal and non-formal education and provides teachers and youth workers across Europe with new content on the topic. The film is a product of the discussions held at the International Spring Forum. The documentary combines audio narration from the online discussions with relevant images and archival materials. -the manual with didactic materials „1989: a lesson from the past“. It supports the strong educational dimension of the project and serves to improve youth’s knowledge of the democratic transitions in Europe. The digital publication provides formal and non-formal education professionals with ready-to-use learning activities and working methods that can be implemented when teaching about the democratic revolutions of 1989. The manual offers teachers and youth workers methods on how to include youth in a dialogue about the democratic changes and their relevance today. The publication suggests ways to introduce the topic to youth while working with archival photographs and old postage stamps. The manual is complementary to the film as it suggests methods on how to use it as an educational tool and provides structured learning activities based on the documentary. The positive feedback from teachers and youth workers that the partners received proves that the film and the manual answer the need for more teaching materials on the democratic revolutions.-the online campaign #reshaping1989. It consists of a series of texts from various European countries which illustrate the place that 1989 occupies in the culture of remembrance in different European societies. Each text covers a key event or a movement during the democratization process in Europe and provides insight into the historical context of a certain European country. These texts build a common European narrative of the democratic transitions of the 1980s and 1990s. The texts were promoted on the social media platforms of all partners including on the Instagram account of the project @reshaping1989.
