Title: EUbyLakes, Open-Air University for the Europe of the Future
Summary
EUbyLakes – Open-air University for the Europe of the Future was a space to discuss on the Europe of the future. Reaching in total more than 552 direct participants and 375 indirect participants in its virtual and in-presence modules, EUbyLakes enabled multilateral conversation on the Future of Europe. This is particularly relevant taking into consideration the turbulent times that are taking place. Participants from more than sixteen countries (in presence), including Ukraine and UK, were able to discuss and elaborate on the Future of Europe. Lakathon organized under “Present, in the Future of the Europe” topic, took place under hybrid format, the solution found to face pandemic and lockdown period, during 2020 and 2021. It was a huge success gathering more than one hundred authorship and artworks that the participants shared following up the discussions on the project’s six focus areas: Democracy, Equality, Climate Neutrality, Cohesion, Biodiversity, and Digital Innovation. Artistic reflection was a powerful instrument to encourage citizens’ participation and a deeper understanding of Europe. From 9/5- 6/6 2020 (Virtual Artistic Residency, 6 weeks) and 23/2 – 25/2 2021 (Culture Knowledge and Innovation Regional Communities, 3 days) almost two hundred people met online to discuss and create essays and artistic work, including authorship in multiple areas from music, to painting, theatre, photography, and podcast testimonials having has a background the topics on debate. This legacy, materialized in artworks, is available on the project webpage (http://festival.eurolake.eu/#/artworks and http://eubylakes.eurolake.eu/artworks ). Additionally, an independent media project, named OurFutureEurope.eu, was commenced. The Open-Air University was set up near six of the most beautiful European lakes: Santillana (ES), Aiguebelette (FR), lseo (IT), Kerkini (EL) and Saimaa (FI) and ended with a concluding event in Portugal, by Alqueva lake. This event followed up on the discussions held during the Lakathon, making it an integral part of each module. In-presence parts of events were organised as several days retreat by each lake, mobilising participants among local stakeholders, artists, authors, and citizens, ensuring overall diversity namely through a call-for-participants open to all. The selection criteria enabled a highly diverse group of participants, involving citizens from at least twelve European countries, and ensured a wide range of perspectives joined the debate. The physical events included debates, workshops; participants-led conferences; visits to the lakes and local heritage; group dynamics; degustation of local gastronomy and analysis of stakeholder’s best practices. Before closing the project a special event, open to all community, was delivered - a concert that joined more than two hundred people.Considering recent developments, such as the Conference of Future of Europe, the transition between the European Year of Youth to the European Year of Skills and the Russian war on Ukraine, the thematic scope of the final week-long event was enlarged in order to consider, debate and treat these topics.EUbyLakes, both with the hybrid and “in-presence” modules, pursued the objectives to (1) promote forward-looking discussions on the future of Europe (2) increase participants' knowledge and understanding of Europe, (3) contribute to citizens' awareness of Europe, (4) establish a permanent Open-Air University by Lakes. The format enabled participants to know and understand rural areas around lakes, as well as local heritage and traditions and give rural and urban citizenship more balanced opportunities which directly relates to youth and skills European years topics. These events were a great expression of European values.
